Here are my Standal Great Grandparents.  Samson Lyder Elias Olsen Standal was born on 24, July 1864  at a farm named Nedre Standalen, located near Flora in Sogn og Fjordane County, Norway.  Sam was one of eight children born to Ole Andreassen Nærvig and Olianne Andersdtr Hafstad.  Ole was a "husmann og fisker", or tennant fisherman, and Sam was not the eldest surviving son.  So he emigrated to North Dakota on 10, August 1888 from Bergen.  Sam began his lifelong career with the Railroad near Dazey, Barnes County and lived the majority of his American life in Binford, Griggs County, North Dakota.  It was here that he would meet a young Norwegian immigrant waitress, named Randine Johnsdtr.
Randine was born on 29, December 1878 on a farm named Kirkebo in the Svatsum Parish of Vestre Gausdal, Oppland County, Norway.  Randine emigrated, with her mother Olea Olsdtr, to North Ottawa Township in Grant County, Minnesota on 10, September 1886.  Randine"s mother did not marry her father in Norway and the two, following the death of Olea's mother, came to America to join Olea's father and brother who had already emigrated to Minnesota.  They lived in Grant County until 1899 when the family moved to homestead a farm in Rosendal Township, Griggs County, North Dakota.  It was at this farm, on 29, December 1901, that Randine married Sam Standal.  This is their wedding photo.  The two had seven children, and lived the rest of their lives in Binford.  Sam died at home on 1, July 1940 and Randine passed away at a hospital in McVille, North Dakota on 30, April 1962.  They are interred, together, at the Lutheran Cemetery in Binford, North Dakota.

Although we know that Sam went back to Norway, twice, this is the only example of correspondence with his home.  The postcard is written by Anna Svardal and says;  "I want to send you a card of Svardalen.  It looks like a little village.  These are some of the largest farms.  Where I live is not on this photo.  And last, I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.  Greetings from Anna Svardal."  Anna was Anna Olivia Andersdtr Standal.  She was a daughter of Sam's older brother, Anders Olai Olsen Standal.  She had married Lars O. Svardal.
